Comments

Red handfish are one of the rarest fish on the planet. They are critically endangered, and currently known in only two locations in Tasmania. Key threats include a small and fragmented population, and degradation of the seaweed habitat that provides shelter. Other processes that affect their habitat (i.e. pollution, nutrients, or interactions associated with sea urchins and their predators) also represent additional threats. Collection for the aquarium trade and introduced species are also potentially important, while warming seas may have contributed to long-term declines. Researchers and community members are working tirelessly to protect the species from extinction. Your support is critical in supporting this research.
